Editing Photos

As good as iPhone cameras are, your creative inner self can have even more fun with the editing features in iOS. Many times you can make a so-so picture amazing with a few tweaks to color, saturation, and light, and by using filters.

Open the Photos "" app, tap a picture, then tap Edit in the upper right to see the editing options.

Editing photos is “non-destructive,” meaning the original photo is never modified or destroyed. Tap Edit, then Revert, then Revert to Original to reverse changes and return to the original image.

Editing tools

Editing tools are grouped by function. When you adjust a photo or add an effect, you can compare the result with the original by tapping the photo to switch between the original and the edited versions. If you have multiple effects applied to a photo, tap the effect button to turn it off and on while leaving the rest of the effects applied.

  • Tap the portrait lighting options buttonto edit lighting for photos taken in Portrait mode (not available on all models).
  • Tap the adjustments button to edit things like exposure, brightness, and saturation. Auto-enhance the auto enhance button is the first option and will apply artificial intelligence to adjust your photo.
  • Tap the filters button to apply filters like sepia or black and white.
  • Tap the size and orientation button to crop, rotate, flip, and straighten the photo.
  • Tap Markup the markup button (top right corner) to annotate the photo with text, drawings, and shapes.

Correcting red-eye

If red-eye is detected, the correction icon  will be visible in the editing toolbar. Touch to activate, then touch over each red-eye you want to correct in the picture. You may need to zoom in using the two-finger pinch to be accurate with finger placement. If you touch the wrong area, you might leave a dark circle where you don’t want one. You can always cancel the edit and try again.

The iPhone and iPad have substantial photo editing capabilities. More editing apps are available from third-party developers in the Apple Store.
