Screen Time

Screen Time summarizes your iPhone usage, breaking down the time spent by categories and apps. Screen Time also gives insight into how frequently you pick up your device and which apps send you the most notifications. For parents, Screen Time lets you set time limits on apps and categories of apps, as well as set downtime periods with a start and end time.

Viewing your Screen Time summary

You can easily check your usage by looking at Screen Time’s summary.

  1. Go to Settings "" and tap Screen Time. If it is not turned on, tap Turn On Screen Time, then designate the device as belonging to you or a child.
  2. If you have multiple Apple devices, tap the name of the device you want to check. You’ll see the summary for the current week.
  3. Tap See all activity to see a summary of your use by category and app over the past week.

Setting restrictions for your device

Open Settings "" > Screen Time and tap any of the options (Downtime, App Limits, Communication Limits, Always Allowed, Content & Privacy Restrictions) to open options for additional controls.

Setting restrictions for family members

  • Go to Settings "" > Screen Time > Set up Screen Time for Family.
  • Tap Add Child.
  • Set Downtime and restrictions, including Content & Privacy Restrictions, and set a parent passcode (remember this, you’ll have to reset the device if you forget) to protect your settings.

Use the Always Allowed list to permit the use of any health-related apps, and perhaps apps like Messages if you need to use these for communicating with a child.
