Personalizing your Gmail Account

There are several ways to make your account more personal and identify yourself to those with whom you wish to communicate. Consider adding a personal photograph and a signature line.

  1. Click Settings, then See all settings.
  2. Make sure the General tab is selected.
  3. In the My picture area, click Choose a picture and upload a photo of yourself. This picture will be used across all Google services.
  4. In the Signature area, click Create new and add a signature line that will be added to every email you write.

There are other settings you can define to suit the way you use Gmail here. Here are a few:

  • In Default reply behavior, choose Reply (not Reply all). This ensures the Reply button always displays first and limits the chance of clicking Reply all by mistake.
  • Undo Send: When you press Send, you get a short grace period to Undo Send, which stops the action. You can change the length of the grace period here.
  • Vacation Responder: Sends an automated reply to incoming messages. It’s a good idea to be vague with these since letting the world know your house will be unoccupied for a length of time is unwise. A simple “I’m going to be out of the office for a few days and will get back to you as soon as possible” won’t make you a target.

Themes

You can change the background of Gmail with themes. You can choose pre-made themes, set the background to a specific color, or use a photo from your computer.

  1. Click Settings to open Quick settings.
  2. In the Theme section, click View all.
  3. Click on a thumbnail to see what the theme will look like.
  4. Click Save. Or, click Cancel to keep your current look.
