Organizing Emails with Labels

Applying labels to your important email messages can help you organize your email conversations. You can create labels for work, family, recipes, anything you want. An email can have as many labels as you wish to apply, and you can view all emails with a particular label by clicking on that label in the Main Menu or typing “in:[name of label]” in the Search box.

Creating a new Gmail label

  1. In the Main Menu, click More, then Create new label.

You can also click the plus sign next to the Labels subheading.
  2. Enter a name for the new label. Notice that you can nest labels. For instance, you can create a top-level label of “Recipes” and nest additional labels, such as “Dinners”, “Deserts” and “Appetizers” as sub-labels under Recipes.
  3. Once labels are created, you can add a color to make it stand out.

Moving messages

You can move messages by dragging them from the Inbox and dropping them on a label, or use the Move to "" or Apply Labels  commands.

Stars

You can mark an email with a star "" by clicking as shown below.

Each time you successively click the star, it will change colors and then styles. (Clicking after a delay clears the star.) You can see the list shown below in Settings > See all settings > General > Stars.

You can easily filter your email list to show only starred messages.

  • Click Starred in the left-hand category list. (You may have to click More to see it.)
