Android Notifications and Permissions

With your permission, apps can send you audible and visual notifications of updates. Apps also need your permission to access the camera, microphone, and contacts.

Notifications

Apps can keep you informed with notifications. For instance, you might want to know when you get a new email, when the weather is turning dangerous, or when there is breaking news. You have control over the notifications each app can send.

  1. Open Settings  , tap Notifications , then tap App settings.
  2. Apps are shown in order of recent notifications. Tap the slider to turn off all notifications from that app. Tap the app itself to see options for different types of notifications.

There are often additional notification settings in the apps themselves. For instance, the Gmail app has settings, including options for audible notifications and urgency. You can find a shortcut to these settings at the bottom of this screen under Additional settings in the app, if available.

Permissions

Your video chat app needs access to your camera and microphone, your message app needs access to your contacts to work. Apps cannot access other apps or hardware without your permission. Apps will ask for permissions when you install them. You can view or edit permissions in Settings.

  1. Open Settings  and tap Apps .
  2. Tap an app, then Permissions, and tap any listed item to see and control what permissions an app has.
