Using Gmail Offline

Even if you don’t have constant access to an internet connection, you can use Gmail. Enabling Gmail offline means Gmail will sync a certain number of days worth of emails to the Chrome browser, allowing you to read, search, and compose without an internet connection. You can send any drafts you compose once connected.

Before enabling Offline mode, be aware that:

  • You must use Gmail within a Chrome browser window, not in incognito mode.
  • Save your inbox address to your bookmarks to make it easier to find without an internet connection. While in Gmail and looking at your main inbox, click the star on the right-hand side of the address bar. You can also use the hotkey combo Ctrl + D.
  • If you are using Gmail with a work or school account, you may need your system admin to help change your settings.

Turn on Gmail Offline

  1. Sign into mail.google.com within a Chrome browser window.
  2. Go to Settings > See all settings > Offline tab.
  3. Select Enable offline mail.
  4. Choose how Gmail will handle offline mode, how many days to sync, and what happens if you sign out of your account.
