Find My App

The Find My app can help you locate your iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Mac computer—even AirPods—if lost or stolen. Find My can erase the data on your iPad or iPhone if your device is lost or stolen and someone repeatedly attempts to enter an incorrect passcode.

You can also share your location with friends and view the location of friends who have shared it with you.

Turn on Find My iPhone

You must turn on Find My before your iPhone is lost or stolen.

  1. Go to Settings "" > Apple ID (your name) > Find My.
  2. Turn on Find My iPhone. On supported iPhones, you can also turn on or off:
    • Find My Network. This uses encrypted communication with other Apple devices to help locate a lost iPhone. No users are involved in the process, so your privacy will remain intact.
    • Send Last Location. If your device’s battery charge level becomes critically low, its location is sent to Apple automatically, and you can view the location in a web browser.
  3. Turn on Share My Location to share your location in the Find My app.

Find a missing device with a web browser

If you have a missing device, sign in to www.iCloud.com on the web. If a friend or family member also has an iPhone or iPad (and will let you use it), have them open the Find My app, tap the Me tab, tap Help a Friend, then tap Sign in with a different Apple ID. This will open the iCloud Find My iPhone webpage in the Safari web browser. You can sign in with your Apple ID on their device.

Select Find iPhone. This will bring up a map. Each dot represents the approximate location of your Apple devices. Click on a dot for more options.

The options will depend on the type of device. You can cause non-Apple earbuds to play a sound to help you locate them, but that’s all. AirPods will play a sound and even show the location of each earbud and the case. Your iPhone can play a sound, too. You can also select:

  • Lost Mode. This activates the Find My network and allows other iPhones to report your device’s location, even if it was erased and powered off (if you toggled Find My network on under Settings > Find My). You can create a lock screen message saying it is lost and how to contact you.
  • Erase iPhone. Removes all personal data from the iPhone.

An iPhone that was reported lost cannot be used by anyone else, even if the device was erased and reset.

Using the Find My app

Open the Find My app. At the bottom of the screen are four tabs, People, Devices, Items, and Me.

  • People. You can share your location with any other Apple device user from here. The map shows locations of people you have shared your location with.
  • Devices. The map shows the locations of all devices registered to your Apple ID as well as devices in your Family Sharing group.
  • Items. AirTags and other supported tags are shown here.
  • Me. This shows your location. It is where you can turn on or off Share My Location, give your location a custom name, and turn friend requests on or off.
