Phone Calls and Voicemails

You can make phone calls from the Phone app , Contacts , and some other apps or widgets that show your contacts or display phone numbers with links.

When you get a phone call, you’ll see the caller’s number, if it’s available, and contact or caller ID information. If the caller is in your Contacts, you’ll see their name and any picture associated with their account.

When you see a phone number in a text message, browser, or another app like Maps, you can usually tap it to automatically initiate a call.

Making a phone call:

  1. Open your Phone app .
  2. Choose a number or contact from your Favorites , Recent Calls , or Contacts .
  3. To enter a number, tap Dialpad  and use the numerical pad to type in a number.
  4. Tap Call  .
  5. When you are done with the call, tap End call .

You can also voice dial using Google Assistant. You can say a number, a name, or even a relationship like “call wife.” If Google doesn’t know who you mean, it will ask for more information and update your contact information automatically.

Answering or rejecting a phone call

You can answer or send a call to voicemail with a swipe or tap. Or, you can decline the call and send a quick message to let them know you’ll call them back.

Answering when your phone is locked:

  • To answer the call, swipe the white circle to the top of the screen or tap Answer.
  • To reject the call and send it to voicemail, swipe the white circle to the bottom of the screen or tap Dismiss.
  • To reject the call and send a text message to the caller, swipe up from the Message icon  .

Answering a call while on another call puts the current call on hold.

Answering when your phone is unlocked:

  • Swipe up to answer incoming calls.
  • Swipe down to decline an incoming call. The caller will be sent to voicemail if available.
  • Press the phone’s power button once to silence an incoming call ring. Press twice to decline the call and send it to voicemail.

Phone call options

While you are on an active call:

  • Tap Dialpad  to bring up the keypad (to dial extensions, navigate voice menus, etc.).
    • To switch the audio to the earpiece, speakerphone, or any connected Bluetooth headset, tap Speaker  , and choose from the options.
    • To mute or unmute your microphone, tap Mute   .
    • To pause a conversation without hanging up, tap Hold . Tap Hold again to resume the call.
    • To switch between active calls, tap Switch  . The non-active call is put on hold.
    • To merge two or more active calls into one conference call, tap Call merge . With some carriers and devices, you can also switch to a video call: Tap Video call .

Receive call notifications

If you are not getting incoming call notifications, you may need to check your phone’s settings. To do this:

  1. Tap Settings .
  2. Tap Apps > App manager > Contacts > Notifications > Allow notifications.

Checking and sending voicemail

  1. Open Phone .
  2. Tap Voicemail if listed in recent calls.
  3. Tap Call  .
  4. Enter password plus pound sign, as directed.
  5. Follow instructions to hear a message, send a message, disconnect, etc.

From the Sounds and Vibration screen, other items can be adjusted—Ringtone, Vibration pattern, Touch sounds, Screen lock sounds, etc.
