Using Gestures to Navigate on an Android Device

Gestures are used to navigate between screens, start and stop apps, zoom in and out of photos, and more.

  • Tap (or touch). A tap is a light, momentary touch of a fingertip to an icon, tile, or another object on the screen.
  • Touch and hold. Involves touching an icon or other object and pausing until something happens, like a screen changes to let you move an icon.
  • Drag or swipe. Drag a fingertip across the screen. You can drag items like icons to a new location or swipe left or right to view photos or pages.
  • Pinch. Pinches are used to zoom in and out. When looking at a picture, place two fingers on either edge of the screen and pinch them together to zoom out. Place two fingers on the screen close together then spread them apart to zoom in.

Swiped start from the edges or the middle area

Some swipes start from the edge of the screen, others from the middle area. For instance, to open Notifications, swipe a finger from the top edge down. To open the All apps list from the Home screen, swipe up beginning from the middle area of the screen. To open recent apps (from any screen), swipe up from the bottom edge.

The touchscreen responds to the touch of your skin on the glass surface. You do not need to use pressure, just a light touch. Some individuals have dry skin, a condition that can also come with aging. If your screen doesn’t respond well to your touch, using lotion or a stylus may help.
