Safari Web Browser

Safari "" is the default browser for iPhones, iPads, and Macs. The Safari button is in the Dock by default. The basic layout of the browser is shown below. Rotating to landscape orientation will change the page content flow (text and images) to a wider perspective.

Safari Reading View

The Safari browser features a Reader View that removes banners, menus, and advertisements and only displays the text of the main article and the pictures that are embedded in the article. Reader view is one of my favorite Safari features. I love to read without having to dodge popups and other annoying web distractions. If Reader View is available on a web page, Safari will briefly display Reader View Available in the address bar. Tap AA in the address bar, then tap Show Reader.

Notice how the banner and other clutter are removed in the following screenshots.

Sharing and saving for later

Tap Share "" at the bottom of the Safari window to open sharing options. Scroll down to see all options.

  • Airdrop "". Share content with nearby iOS users by sending it directly to their phones. They must have Airdrop turned on (this can be done in the Control Center).
  • Mail  and Messages "". Share content by sending links via email or instant message.
• Social Media. Swipe left to view more social media sharing options.
  • Add to Favorites . Add this site to a list of your favorite sites.
  • Add Bookmark "". Create a bookmark for this site.
  • Add to Reading List  "". Add this site to your reading list. The reading saves the exact article and makes it available to read offline.
  • Add to Home Screen "". Add a button on your Home Screen that will open Safari to the web page when you tap it.

Private browsing mode

You can open a web page in private mode if you don’t want your browser to record your searches or the web pages you visit.

  • Long press "" and select New Private Tab from the Quick Actions menu.
  • To exit Private Browsing mode, tap "", then close the Private tab by swiping it left, or tap the X in the upper right of the thumbnail.

Remember that using a private browsing window does not make you anonymous on the internet or hide your online activities from your internet provider or, if you are browsing at work, from your company’s IT department. Private browsing only means that Safari will delete your history and website cookies from your device when you close the browser. Files and bookmarks are not deleted. See our courses on cybersecurity for more important information on staying safe online.

Preview website links

Long press a hyperlink to preview the destination webpage without leaving the page you are on. A Quick Actions menu will also appear, allowing you to open the new page in a new tab or add the page to your Reading List. Touch anywhere outside of the preview to close it.

Navigate with Safari

  • Return to the top of a long webpage. Tap the top edge of the screen.
  • See more content on wide pages. Rotate the iPhone to landscape orientation.
  • Refresh the page. Tap the refresh button to reload the page from the internet.

Move the address bar to the top (or bottom)

You can choose the location of the URL and search box.
