Changing the Look

You can personalize your device with your favorite wallpaper (the background picture on your Lock Screen and Home Screen). You can also set your device to dim automatically when your environment is dark, and reduce the amount of emitted blue light at night before you go to bed.

Changing the wallpaper

Apple provides some beautiful background images to choose from, both still and dynamic (moving) images, for you to use as wallpaper. But, you are not limited to Apple’s choices. For true personalization, you can choose any picture from your camera roll.

  1. Go to Settings "" > Wallpaper > Choose a New Wallpaper.
  2. Choose from the following options:
    • Choose from the collections of dynamic, stills, or live options provided by Apple. These are all perfectly sized for your screen.
    • Scroll down and choose one of your pictures from All Photos or an album. You can then pinch to zoom and drag the photo into the desired position.
  3. Tap Set, and choose your preference for where your photo displays.
    • Set Lock Screen only.
    • Set Home Screen only.
    • Set Both.

Customizing your Lock Screen

You have the option of enabling some features and widgets to your Lock Screen, making it easier to access and respond to messages without having to unlock your device.

  1. Go to Settings "" > Face ID & Passcode (Touch ID & Passcode on a device with a Home button).
  2. In the section labeled “ALLOW ACCESS WHEN LOCKED,” choose from the options provided, including:
    • Enabling Today View allows you to swipe right from the Lock Screen to access the widgets you have set there. This can be handy for checking the weather, calendar, news, and more, depending on the options you set for the Today View.
    • Enabling the Control Center gives you quick access to Do Not Disturb, Airplane Mode, and other handy controls.
    • Reply with Message allows you to quickly respond to messages without unlocking your device.

Activating Dark Appearance

You can now choose a dark theme for your device. Dark Appearance darkens the backgrounds of many screens, reducing eye strain. As a bonus, a darker screen will extend battery life.

  1. Go to Settings "" > Display & Brightness.
  2. In the Appearance section, select Dark.
  3. Return to Settings, then tap Wallpaper.
  4. Toggle on Dark Appearance Dims Wallpaper. In low light situations, this will cause the background of your Home Screen to dim.
