Cellular Hotspots
Another way to connect to the internet is by turning your smartphone or cellular-enabled tablet into a Wi-Fi Hotspot. You can then connect your computer to your smartphone’s Wi-Fi signal. You may also be able to connect to your smartphone via Bluetooth or USB. Either way, you are connecting to the internet using your smartphone’s data connection through your cellular provider. Note that not all cellular plans support personal hotspots and separate charges may apply. However, smartphone hotspots are becoming much more popular and most smartphones and carriers can support the feature.
iPhone and iPad hotspots
- Open Settings > Personal Hotspot.
- Enable Allow Others to Join.
- Set password if necessary.
You can change your hotspot name to something unique.
- Open Settings.
- Scroll to and tap General > About.
- Select Name and enter your preferred hotspot name.
Using your smartphone to connect to the internet is safer than public Wi-Fi. No one can eavesdrop on the communications between your smartphone and your carrier.
